SCRANTON, Pennsylvania, JULY 1 – Chief executives from Darkhive Inc., a San Antonio, Texas-based, veteran-led aerospace and defense technology firm, joined leadership at Tobyhanna Army Depot (Tobyhanna) to celebrate the groundbreaking installation of its brushless DC motor assembly lines.

Tobyhanna has been steadfast in its commitment to modernize the organic industrial base and invest in advanced manufacturing. In line with its transformation efforts, the Pennsylvania-based depot partnered with Darkhive to improve its manufacturing operations, including advising on the design and installation of the motor lines.

“Tobyhanna is at the forefront of industrial base modernization, and what they have already achieved is incredible,” said Darkhive  COO Karen Coombs. “They are completely re-imagining domestic production for drone dominance. We are proud to support them in realizing their long-term plans to ensure military readiness in the years and fights ahead.”

Coombs is a U.S. Army veteran and a global operations and supply chain expert. Prior to joining Darkhive, Coombs led supply chain operations for Amazon Robotics.

“When you step foot on Tobyhanna and observe these new motor lines, you already see how far the Army has come in modernizing,” Coombs said. “Just a few, short months ago, what you would have saw in this space was a clean floor. Today, they have the capability to produce hundreds of thousands of units. Their facilities are truly state-of-the-art.”

"The depot workload is shifting from what you would call traditional maintenance, repair, and overhaul to putting us into a manufacturing space," Colonel Benjamin Kilgore, Tobyhanna Army Depot Commander, has previously said.

“If we have drone components made in America by an Army Organic Industrial Base site,” Col. Kilgore has said, “it makes the whole supply chain, that whole ecosystem more resilient.”
